Early Muni subway closure for ‘Fix-It Week’ begins Thursday
Early Muni Metro closures will start Thursday, March 16 so that maintenance crews work on critical issues in the subway, transit officials said.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency said the subway will close at 9:30 p.m. During the early closure through midnight, bus shuttle service that will service Muni Metro stops from Steuart and Market streets to St. Francis Circle. Owl service will run as normal. The early subway closure will last through Wednesday, March 22.
Muni passengers should look for the half moon shaped yellow sign at bus stops on Market Street to board shuttle buses on Market Street.
Trains will continue to run on the K Ingleside and M Ocean View between Balboa Park and St. Francis circle. The J Church and N Judah will interlink with trains running between Balboa Park and Ocean Beach.
The T Third will not be affected by the early subway closure.
SFMTA officials dubbed the early closures as “Fix-It Week” so that maintenance crews can address issues in the subway that they are unable to work on during the normal window of time when the subway closes at midnight.
Late last August after the agency completed one of its quarterly early subway closures, Director of Transportation Jeffrey Tumlin said to expect the SFMTA to continue to do these closures.
“Until we have fully addressed the SFMTA decades of deferred maintenance, I expect to be continuing these exercises about every quarter because it’s what is making a difference and making the system reliable even though we don’t have the resources necessary to do modernization upgrades just yet,” Tumlin said.
The SFMTA’s website said the maintenance crew will focus on overhead lines, tracks and signals as well as the subway’s automated train control system.
