Carnival coming to Civic Center with corn dogs, cotton candy and Ferris Wheel
A four-day carnival complete with funnel cakes, cotton candy and rides is heading to the Civic Center in August, San Francisco officials announced Monday.
The carnival is the city’s latest plan to activate public space in the mid-Market Street area to make the area a safe place for residents and visitors, especially the area near United Nations Plaza. To make events like the carnival a safe environment, the city’s budget recently signed by Mayor London Breed, includes an additional eight park rangers to patrol Civic Center.
“Creating vibrant, lively public spaces with activities people of all ages can enjoy is how we create stronger, safer communities,” Breed said in a press statement.
The Civic Center Carnival will start Aug. 24 to 27 on Fulton Street between the Asian Art Museum and the Main Library. The carnival will open from 12:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Other featured carnival food items expected to be available include corn dogs, Hawaiian shave ice, popcorn and caramel apples.
The carnival will have games and rides, including a Ferris Wheel, a 100-foot slide, spinning teacups and a funhouse, the Mayor’s Office said.
Anyone attending will need to spend a minimum of $10 toward food, games or rides for each person over 12 years old.
On the first day of the carnival, the Asian Art Museum will open its new 7,500-square-foot outdoor East West Terrace that will house events and contemporary sculptures.
The announcement of the carnival comes after the Recreation and Parks Department’s announcement to pilot a skating area in UN Plaza. The department also plans to have exercise equipment, ping pong, teqball and tables for chess.
Work on the skating area will start in September and will open approximately six weeks later, city officials said.
